Athletic Therapists are health care professionals who specialize in the prevention, assessment and care of musculoskeletal disorders, especially as they relate to athletics and the pursuit of physical activity (OATA, 2009). Athletic Therapists (ATs) are usually the first to respond to an injury or emergency typically in a sports setting. All levels of active people and teams use ATs for their knowledge of acute injuries. All athletes and active people want “rapid return to work and play” (OATA). Once the diagnosis is made, the AT will treat and manage the injury. What separates ATs from other health care professionals is the keen awareness of acute injury management, biomechanics, strength and conditioning and manual therapy. This, along with advanced first aid, makes an Athletic Therapist a great choice for athletes of all levels. Athletic Therapists are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of mild traumatic brain injuries (concussions). Athletic Therapists use advanced assessments, for instance, cranial nerve testing and the SCAT test, to determine if a concussion may have been sustained. Manual therapy and working alongside sports medicine physicians are also in the scope of athletic therapy.

Athletic therapy within a clinical setting provides the same mix of on-the-field care and expertise in musculoskeletal (muscles, bones, and joints) for all individuals with varying activity levels.

Athletic Therapists adhere to the Sports Medicine Model of care, whereby practitioners treat a wide range of patients, from kids with concussions to seniors recovering from hip replacement surgery, using various manual therapies, modalities, exercise prescription, and even bracing and taping. The treatment varies, but the objective remains the same: to help clients return to their usual activities, whether playing competitive sports or walking to the mailbox.

Some extended health benefit plans cover athletic therapy, and can be claimed as a medical service expense. Please contact your provider to learn more, and let us know if you are seeking our service through your medical provider prior to booking.

Physiotherapists are primary health care professionals who treat injuries or persistent pain that affects how you live, work, and play. Our goal is to get you back to your activities and help you become the best version of yourself!

Physiotherapy starts with an initial assessment to diagnose your problem, to determine what can be done to help, and to provide you with a timeline for how long it may take. The initial assessment will involve learning about your past medical history, performing a thorough musculoskeletal examination, reviewing any diagnostic imaging/testing, and identifying your current and future goals.

Based on this initial assessment, we will develop a treatment plan together. It will center around a personalised home exercise program designed to address body areas that may need additional strength, mobility, and motor coordination. This program will be gradually progressed over time to optimize your recovery and to achieve your goals. Your treatment plan may also involve hands-on techniques, performed by your physiotherapist, to help with muscles and joints that are painful or not moving normally. This can include soft tissue release, joint mobilizations, and dry needling. These hands-on techniques can be especially helpful for patients who are experiencing significant pain or movement barriers that make exercise difficult.

Many extended health benefit plans cover Registered Physiotherapy. Please check your plan first. Registered Physiotherapy can be claimed as a medical expense. PLEASE NOTE: We do not assess or treat WSIB or Motor Vehicle Accident claims/clients.

Madison graduated from Algonquin College’s Massage Therapy Intensive program and continues to develop her assessment and treatment skill for a variety of different conditions. Madison has gained hands-on experience at a number of massage clinics in Ottawa, at the Riverside Hospital and at Carleton University, working with athletes, as well as volunteering at Ottawa Race weekend and at Ottawa University Athletics.

Madison grew up in Ottawa where she spent her time training as a competitive dancer. She understands the dedication and commitment it takes to be a part of a competitive sport. With that training, came injuries and subsequent rehabilitation to regain her strength and coordination after being off. This is one of the reasons she became a massage therapist, to have the ability to try and help individuals reach their goal, whether it be returning to their sport or active lifestyle after an injury or improving quality of life with a chronic condition.

Madison has a passion for learning which drives her to attend a number of professional development courses annually, such as NeuroKinetic Therapy and Sports Massage. This allows her to expand her knowledge base and apply her newfound knowledge and skills to her clients. Madison believes the more tools and resources there are for her clients, the more effective she can be. Madison is a strong believer in an integrated team environment and works closely with the professionals at Continuum Fitness to help provide the best care for her clients. Madison takes an assessment-based approach to her treatment. She uses postural assessment, range of motion and manual muscle testing to find compensations and movement patterns within her clients. This allows her to help create a treatment plan unique to each individual. Madison treats a variety of injuries and conditions in people with limited flexibility to those who are hypermobile, helping each person improve mobility and stability.

Cailey grew up in the Ottawa area, playing soccer at a competitive level. Through her years of sport, she experienced minor injuries that sparked an interest in providing therapy and rehabilitation to active individuals within the Ottawa community. She completed her education through Sheridan College’s Bachelor of Applied Health Science (Athletic Therapy) program and began providing her therapeutic skills to amateur, university and professional athletes. Cailey enjoys administering manual therapy and values patient education to facilitate the most beneficial treatment. She addresses not only a patient’s primary concern, but also underlying postural dysfunction as well as bio-mechanical problems, to prevent injury re-occurrence.

Cailey treats a vast clientele from weekend warriors, home renovators, local, amateur/competitive athletes and desk jockeys. Through her time at Continuum, Cailey has worked with the exercise and therapy team to assist clients in achieving their desired goals of returning to activities of daily living, improving sport performance, recovery from acute and chronic injuries and breaking down bio-mechanic barriers.

Patrick is a registered physiotherapist who has been practicing in Ottawa for 10 years. He completed his Masters of Science in Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta in 2011. He has since continued his education through advanced training and certifications including Orthopaedic Manual and Manipulative Physical Therapy and Functional Dry Needling.

As a child, Patrick played a variety of different recreational sports. But it was in his early 20s that he discovered the sport of triathlon and was immediately hooked. He swam. He biked. He ran. He raced. He read everything he could about triathlon. He talked to everyone who would listen to him talk about triathlon. Then, he swam, biked, ran, and raced some more. Eventually, Partick became a coach for the University of Alberta Triathlon Club, where he discovered another passion - one for helping others find and achieve their goals. That passion was what eventually led him to pursue a career in physiotherapy.

After all that triathlon training, it turned out Patrick had a bit of talent in distance running. So, while studying to become a physiotherapist, he competed for the University of Alberta Golden Bears varsity team in Cross-Country and Track and Field. In his words, he just barely made the team as a walk-on, but earned the opportunity to compete in both CIS National Championships and NCAA D1 races.

After university, Patrick took to the roads, chasing down PBs at races from the 10K (33m) to the Marathon (2h40m).

These days you can find Patrick running along the Ottawa River with a big smile on his face. He may even appear in a local road race. But for now, as a father of two adventurous young girls, life is too busy for serious training. So until his eventual comeback, he maintains his fitness by digging giant snow forts, building backyard rinks, and chasing kids through sprinklers.
